The artist behind the distinctive Banksy Tesco bags and hats has chosen to remain anonymous. There has been plenty of speculation about their identity, but for now, the mystery remains part of the artwork. And they certainly wouldn’t be the first artist to create under a pseudonym or choose anonymity over recognition.

It raises an interesting question: if this work had been produced by a famous, instantly recognisable artist, would people buy it because of the name or because they genuinely connect with the message, the idea and the artwork itself?

Perhaps that is part of what makes these pieces so interesting. Stripped of a famous name, you are left with the artwork and the message and ultimately, whether it resonates with you.
