Vintage Propaganda Posters – A Collection for Sale
I’m offering a selection of propaganda posters, each one a piece of history that was designed to do far more than decorate a wall. Before television and long before social media, the printed poster was one of the most powerful ways a government could speak directly to its people. Pasted on factory walls, railway stations, shop windows and street corners, these images were seen by millions every day.
Their purpose was simple but urgent: to persuade. In wartime, posters were used to recruit soldiers, encourage people to work harder, ration food, buy war bonds, stay alert to spies and keep morale high through the darkest days. They celebrated victories, honoured sacrifice and cast the enemy as a threat to everything people held dear. In peacetime, the same techniques were used to promote political ideals, celebrate national achievements and shape how people saw their country and their place in it.
To do this, poster artists developed a visual language that is still instantly recognisable today: bold slogans, strong colours, dramatic figures and simple, direct compositions that could be understood in a glance. Many of these posters were created by highly skilled artists, and their influence can be seen everywhere, from graphic design and advertising to today’s street and urban art.
Collecting these posters is not about endorsing the messages they carried. It is about preserving a remarkable record of how art was used to move people, and how history looked to those living through it. Each poster tells a story about its time, its makers and its audience, and makes a bold, thought-provoking statement on any wall.
Please see individual listings for details of each poster, including artist, date, size and condition.
